What no one ever tells you about LOVE

"When we met first, I found my beginning ..."
 Quote by:  Ilyas Abu Shabaka

"Beloved, let your eyes half close, and your heart beat over my heart"
 Quote by:  W.B. Yeats

"Love me in the lightest part, Love me in full being"
 Quote by:  Elizabeth Barrett Browning

"Give all to Love"
 Quote by:  Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Ah, Love, let us be true to one another !"
 Quote by:  Matthew Arnold

"O! let me have three whole - all, all, be mine !"
 Quote by:  John Keats

How do you know if love is the real thing?  Or, as Cole Porter Famously wrote in the song "At Long Last Love," is it an earthquake or simply a shock?  While you're wondering whether your romance is for keeps, get comfortable and consider the following:

Before you ask, is this the real thing?  Ask yourself, Am I the real thing?  Are you counting on a person - or a relationship - to make you feel complete?

Poets and mystics tell us that love is the energy that animates all life.  Draw two hearts and divide one into sections corresponding to where your love and attention are currently invested [romantic partner, family, new baby, friends, work, charities, creative projects, etc.].  Divide the other to indicate where you would ideally commit your love.  What needs adjusting?  How could you accomplish that?

Love may be blind, but a good relationship requires that you be observant.  Fill in the blanks below, then check your answers with your partner.  [If you get more than two wrong, you might want to review your level of attentiveness]

Your partner's ideal vacation
Your partner's favorite color

Your partner's favorite movie genre
Your partner's favorite sport
Your partner's favorite section in a bookstore
Your partner's hero
Your partner's political affiliation
Your partner's ideal job
Your partner's best friend [s]

Do you envy other people who have found true love?  What do they have that you don't?  What could you learn to help you find love, or build on the one that you already have?

Write your definition of real love in the space below.  Now reread it.  Does your current relationship fit this description?  If not, what needs to change; your relationship or your idea of what "real love" means?
