February is International Expect Success Month, a time to inspire yourself and others to seize new challenges.  This month I met the Author and Image Consultant who inspired me to start my journey from Frumpy to Fearless, Brenda Kinsel!

Back in 2001, when I was 35 pounds heavier, afraid to look in the mirror, and wearing hand-me-downs, I discovered Brenda's book, 40 Over 40 - 40 Things Every Woman Over 40 Needs to Know about Getting Dressed.  I circled this intriguing title at the bookstore three times before I dared to pick it up.  Her message, "You're worth full price" stopped me in my tracks.  Her book compelled me to seek new challenges and became the catalyst for my second career as an Image Consultant, Speaker and Trainer.

Meeting Brenda, hearing her stories and sharing my story with her was a thrilling experience.  At her excellent workshop for the Association of Image Consultants International NY Tri-State Chapter, Brenda challenged us by asking, "What are you moving away from?  What are you moving towards?"  Saying what you want out loud, writing it down, and keeping your eye on the prize will help you to expect success!

Effortless Networking

Lessons from a Natural Networker

Charles Darwin was born 199 years ago this month.   While his life and works are widely renowned, his journey to become one of the world's greatest naturalists did not begin well.  At 16, Darwin's father, a famous society doctor, stormed, "You will be a disgrace to yourself and your family."  How did Darwin go from disgrace to distinguished?  Darwin used networking to open  the door to new opportunities.  His story offers valuable lessons that all of us can use today.

Darwin's First Networking Strategy:

Communicate your passion and develop advocates that are willing to help

As a child and teen, Darwin was passionate and curious about the outdoors.  He loved collecting plants and insects, especially beetles!  School, however, left him bored and indifferent.  Forced into medical school by his father, Darwin hated the site of blood.  His father wisely saw the poor career fit and steered him towards the clergy where he could explore the wonders of nature.   At Cambridge, Darwin was singled out by an influential circle of academics who recognized his potential.  His Professors became his Talent Scouts. Darwin's favorite Professor (and Mentor) later offered him the chance of a lifetime: a trip around the world on the HMS Beagle.   Can you guess what Darwin's father said?  NO!  Darwin appealed to another Advocate, his Uncle, and got permission to take the fateful voyage that would impact the world.

What Networking Lessons can we learn from this?

As a Networker, when you communicate your passion to others, Advocates will find you.  When Darwin's father saw his son's passion, he shrewdly helped him to find the right career match. When his Professors saw his curiousity and dedication, Darwin went to the top of the A list for future opportunities.  Ask yourself: How can you be an Advocate for someone else?  Have you ever been a Talent Scout?  How have you been helped by a Talent Scout?

Look for Darwin's "Organized Networker" strategy in next month's newsletter.  To learn more about this natural networker visit www.DarwinDay.org.
